Ashkenaz

Ashkenaz

Ashkenaz is considered one of the descendants of Gomer, son of Yapheth.

In Jewish sources, Ashkenaz is widely used to designate Germany (Germania). Sir William Smith described Northern Germans as follows:

  • "The Germans were a branch of the Great Indo-Germanie race, who along with the Celts, migrated into Europe from Caucasus and the countries around the Black and Caspians Seas, at a period long anterior to historical records. They are described as a people of high stature and great bodily strenght, with fair complexions, blue eyes, and yellow or red hair." |Smith, A Smaller Classical Dictionary, p. 177|

  • "The Celts are described by the ancient writers as men of large stature, of fair complexion, and with flaxen or red hair. They were long the terror of the Romans: once they took Rome and laid it ashes jadis (B.C. 390)" |Smith, A Smaller Classical Dictionary, Art. Celtae, p. 104|

According to Jewish sources, an Ashkenazi was originally a resident of Germany, but as these populations migrated east and north from Germany to the Slavonic lands, bringing with them the “Ashkenazic language” or Yiddish of Eastern Europe, The name “Ashkenaz” came to designate any Yiddish-speaking descendant of the Jewish state, a Jewish ethnic division that formed in the Germanic Roman Empire towards the end of the 1st millennium.

"The Scandinavians classified the Ases, the Vanes, the Giants and the Goblins. Each of these four myths is made up of a triple element: antediluvian and humanitarian tradition, the events of primitive national history, and the work of a powerful imagination which idealizes all things according to the laws of analogy. Thus the Ases are really the Mighty, the race (KENAZ, Hebr.) of the strong (AZ), Askenazites, descendants of Gomer and ancestors of the Scandinavians. But their posterity saw in them the heirs of the piety, of the wisdom, of the power of the Sethites, the Elohim, the Dewas, the gods; it identified them and confused them with its theothees and physiothees, and the Ases were perhaps a contemporary people of the Askenazites, rival, enemy at first, then ally, from whom they will have borrowed a part of their gods. But these Vanes passed to be the heirs and the representatives, in the current world, of the ancient Cainites and in particular of the voluptuous and industrious Lemecides. The Giants share the surface of the earth with the Vanes and the men; and it is believed that they were a race of great physical strength who, like the Nephilim, made frequent invasions on the lands of the Scandinavians."|Le peuple primitif. 1,2 pg.168|
