Giant Humans and the Nephilim

If you read the following verse carefully, you'll notice it's not only very ambiguous, but it also tells a story different from popular beliefs, assumptions and theories

• Genesis 6:4 "The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and afterward as well—when the sons of God had relations with the daughters of men. And they bore them children who became the mighty men of old, men of renown."

First and foremost, the main idea of this verse is that, effectively, giants did exist. However, there were two types of giants: those of Adam's lineage who were already on earth and another type of giants that appeared following unions between angels and women from Cain's lineage. This other race of giants were men of extraordinary strength and size, who used these dangerous attributes to indulge in all vices and abominations, as well as to oppress and tyrannize those who were less powerful. These new half-angel/half-man giants became famous men, authors of great achievements and heroes of antiquity. According to historical accounts, the heroes of antiquity were descendants of Japheth, and were regarded as mortal demigods (children of a divine parent) exceptional for their intelligence, bravery and strength, they are mainly found in: the heroes of Greek mythology, the war heroes of Persia, the first heroes of ancient Rome...

This implies the Nephilim had not completely disappeared after the flood. Yet, some Scriptures suggest that by means of the flood, ELOHIM purified the earth of all corruption and also took away the ability of humans and angels to interact freely such that they could no longer transgress the boundary established between heaven and earth through sexual acts.

• "And He made for all His works a new and righteous nature, so that they should not sin in their whole nature for ever, but should be all righteous each in his kind always. |The Book of Jubilees, Chap 5:12|

• For they possessed freedom in that time in which they were created. And some of them came down and mingled themselves with women. At that time they who acted like this were tormented in chains. But the rest of the multitude of angels, who have no number, restrained themselves. |The Book of Baruch, Chap 56:11-14|

How then did the Nephilim continue to exist after the flood? 

There are only two logical explanations:

1 - The word "giants" is a translation of the Hebrew word "nephilim" derived from "naphal", which means "to fall" or "those who have fallen" or "to fall on something with violence". The meaning of the word giant could then be interpreted as a derogatory term use in the Bible in a cultural leadership context to indicate that these were not good people, but men with a "fallen" form of humanity, i.e., those who have strayed from what God expected of men.

2 - It's a known fact that Noah and his sons were also giants, but not as huge as our antediluvian predecessors. It's also known that the descendants of Cain married into the lineage of Seth, the family from which Noah was born; and the descendants of Japheth, in particular, were of gigantic size compared to those of Ham and Shem. However, the Scriptures do not tell us from which families the wives of Noah's sons were descended, so one might speculate that one of them, most likely Japheth's, was of the Nephilim bloodline.

The problem with this second hypothesis is this: if the heroes of antiquity were the posterity of Japhet, this implies that Japhet's lineage is connected to that of the Naphidim Cainites of Cain's lineage. Yet the Cainites are listed as descendants of Canaan, son of Ham, which would imply that the heroes of antiquity were from Ham's bloodline and not that of Japheth, thereby inevitably calling into question Noah's curse against the posterity of Ham. Clearly, something is amiss.

Were they all Hamites descended from Canaan?

The Bible allude to the fact that the giants who remained until the time of David, and inhabited the Promised Land, included the the Canaanites, descendants of Canaan, but also the Kenites, the Kenizites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Girgashites, the Jebusites and , son of Ham. (Genesis 15:19)

• However, the Kenites or Cainites descended from Cain. In Hebrew, the name "Kenite" comes from Cain. The Kenites seem to have been well respected in the Scriptures. As skillful artists, they lived near Mount Sinai and established successful trade relationships with other tribes living in the area. But they had conflicting relations with the Canaanites.

If the Rephaim and Kenites were from Japheth's bloodline, why are they cited as descendants of Canaan, son of Ham?

The Monsters...

However, if you read the Scriptures with the utmost attention and discernment, you will realize that in addition to the Giants and the Nephilim, there was also another monstrous offspring, born of abnormal and unnatural relationships between fallen angels, Nephilim and animals.

• [... two hundred] donkeys, two hundred asses, two hundred [... rams of the] flock, two hundred goats, two hundred [... beast of the] Field from every animal, from every [bird ...][...] for miscegenation [...] The Book of Giants 1Q23 Frag. 1 et 6 

• [...] they defiled [...][... they begot] giants and monsters [...][...] they begot, and, behold, all [the earth was corrupted ...][...] with its blood and by the hand of [...][giant's]] which did not suffice for them and [...][...] and they were seeking to devour many [...] The Book of Giants 4Q531 Frag. 2

• “And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day. just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire" Jude 1:6-7

• “And their judges and rulers went to the daughters of men and took their wives by force from their husbands according to their choice, and the sons of men in those days took from the cattle of the earth, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and taught the mixture of animals of one species with the other, in order therewith to provoke the Lord.” Jasher 4:18

• “And the giants turned against them in order to devour men. And they began to sin against birds, and against animals, and against reptiles, and against fish, and they devoured one another's flesh, and drank the blood from it.” Enoch 7:4-5 

• “And lawlessness increased on the earth and all flesh corrupted its way, alike men and cattle and beasts and birds and everything that walketh on the earth-all of them corrupted their ways and their orders, and they began to devour each other, and lawlessness increased on the earth and every imagination of the thoughts of all men (was) thus evil continually.” Jubilees 5:2 

• “Owing to the fornication wherein the Watchers against the law of their ordinances went a whoring after the daughters of men, and took themselves wives of all which they chose: and they made the beginning of uncleanness.” Jubilees 7:20 

• And afterward about one hundred and twenty great and terrible animals came out from the wilderness at the other side of the sea, and they all came to the place where the asses were, and they placed themselves there. And those animals, from their middle downward, were in the shape of the children of men, and from their middle upward, some had the likeness of bears, and some the likeness of the keephas, with tails behind them from between their shoulders reaching down to the earth, like the tails of the ducheephath, and these animals came and mounted and rode upon these asses, and led them away, and they went away unto this day. |The Book of Jasher, chap. 36: 31-32|​​​

This third monstrous offspring of the antediluvian age began to commit all sorts of evil deeds on earth: cannibalism, consumption of blood, etc. These immoral acts made the earth an extremely dangerous place to live.

"And they begat sons the Naphidim, and they were all unlike, and they devoured one another: and the Giants slew the Naphil, and the Naphil slew the Eljo, and the Eljo mankind, and one man another."  |The Book of Jubilees, Chap 7:22|

Consequently, YAHWEH ordered a great flood mainly to annihilate this new monstrous race, to punish the increasing wickedness and to cleanse the earth. And as mentioned above, He took away certain abilities from the entire creation.
