The Number 7

Biblical Meaning of the Number 7

The Number 7

In the Bible, the number 7 is considered one of the most powerful numbers that represents totality, divine perfection or something completed.

The 7 refers to the creation of the world which YAHWEH accomplished in 6 days and rested on the 7th day for all was completely finished; thus creating the basis for the 7 day week we use to this day.

In mathematics, 7 is a prime number which means it can only be divided by itself and by the number 1.

  1. Genesis 2:2 "And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work."

This is a number frequently found in the Bible:

God's Word is purified 7 times.

  • Psalm 12:6 "The words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace, like gold purified sevenfold."

  • Genesis 4:15 "Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him."

Taking the seven loaves and the fish, He gave thanks and broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people

Notice that Jesus performed this miracle twice. The first time in Bethsaida for 5000 men and the second time in Galilee for 4000 men. He challenged the discernment of his disciples who had not understood why there were 12 baskets left the first time, then 7 baskets the second time.

  • Mark 8:19-21 "When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?” “Twelve,” they answered. And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?” “Seven,” they said. And He was saying to them, "Do you not yet understand?"
